President's Message

I am pleased to present to you our DIA Officers and Board for 2010:
President Bill Kight (District 3),
Vice President Holly Kartsonis (District 7), Landscaping
Secretary Dr. Ed Ossi (District 1) Legal, Special Projects
Treasurer Ernie Cornehl (District 6)

Diane Law (District 2), Communications
Dr Joe Utz (District 4), Special Projects
John Heijmans (District 5), Finance
Glynn Thomas, (District 8), Access Control
Tom Genest, (At Large), Standards
George Harris (At Large), Common Property
Miffy Calhoun (At Large), Cares

Thanks to all of our past Board members and volunteers for their commitment and generous gift of their time particularly Jack Krings, John Ranes and Linda Baucom Jones. Special thanks also to John Heijmans for his years as Treasurer. He will remain on the Finance Committee.

We are presently finishing up a couple of major projects including Paving and Phase II of our Lighting Project. Our lighting consultant has designed and Board members have physically walked the area designated for Phase 3 of the Lighting Project and we are in the process of evaluating the costs. The new lights that are in place look great and contribute to making Deerwood a safer place to walk, ride and drive! We continue to do our best to keep up with the maintenance of the old lights. Please let Access Control (632-1633), know if a light is out on your street!

Our Landscape and Grounds Committees are making plans for both maintenance and improvements for this budget year. Call our Property Manager (273-3033) if you notice a broken sprinkler. The Architectural Review and Standards Committees continue to work with our residents to keep Deerwood an attractive, premier property. You will often see Glynn Thomas, our Access Control Chair at the “Gate House” working with our contracted providers, First Coast Security, to manage access in Deerwood. We have added several security cameras and improved our computer system to track vehicles in and out of our gates. Glynn also works closely with JSO and reminds us that, even though we are a gated community, residents should lock their cars and close their garage doors when not outside. He also cautions people to ADHERE TO THE SPEED LIMIT when driving in Deerwood.

We live in a beautiful community so let’s do our best to keep it a safe one as well! We look forward to working with you on our DIA Committees and please join our new “Cares Committee”!

Bill Kight

Property Manager’s Report

Greetings once again from Marsh Landing Management, your property management company! As I’m sure most of you may have noticed, the Phase 2 lighting project is complete. Many thanks go to the members of the Lighting Committee for all their hard work. The old poles are in the process of being removed. The Lighting Committee is already starting the process for Phase 3 and will soon be presenting it to the Board for their review.

By the time you are reading this newsletter you may have noticed the new reader boards at the entrances to the community. We hope you enjoy the new look and location and please be sure to check them often for important messages and information.

There have been several questions regarding paving within the community. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with the previous paving company completing the contracted work and correcting some of the work that is unsatisfactory. We are working to resolve these issues and hope to complete the project soon.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at 273-3033.

Douglas Scott, CAM
Property Manager

Access Control

Our Access Control Committee works closely with our contracted Access Control staff from First Coast Security and off duty Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officers (JSO). One of our staffers, First Coast Security Officer, Elaine Davis, was awarded the first “Soaring Above” award for outstanding service to the community of Deerwood. She was recognized for her courtesy, professionalism, service and job knowledge. Many recognize Officer Davis, who works the day shift at the Baymeadows Gate. In addition to being presented a beautiful trophy, she was treated to a luncheon with First Coast President, Bland Cologne, Glynn Thomas, Access Control Board Chairman and Joe Holliday, Deerwood Account Manager.

• Safety Concerns: We have seen a number of close calls when entering or exciting the gates, due to abrupt lane changes. Be extremely cautious when changing lanes after passing through the gates.

• Our contracted Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officers, have reported an increase in the number of citations issued in Deerwood. Violations of speed through the School Zone, Stop Sign violations and citations for going the wrong way at the traffic circles are on the rise. Please obey the traffic laws and posted speed limits!

• Report any suspicious activity to the First Coast Security Patrol Officer, by calling the gate at 642-1633. If you have any immediate safety concerns call 911 or JSO at 630-0500 first and then call the gate to report. We cannot place a 911 call, unless we are on the scene or witness the event.

Landscape Committee

Springtime has arrived after a very cold winter. Deerwood’s knockout roses look magnificent in everyone’s yards! Remember to fertilize for robust blooms. For a tropical look think about planting Hawaiian ti plants, stromantha (a tricolored ginger), birds of paradise, banana plants, purple Persian shields, split leaf philodendrons, variegated gingers, angel trumpets, and ornamental peppers. These tropical plants will make everyone’s yard look like paradise. Our butterflies and hummingbirds enjoy milk weed, bat plants (cephra plants), kangaroo paw, shrimp plants, butterfly bush, and bottle brush. Sunflowers are great for the birds and squirrels. Don’t forget about planting veggies from seeds as green beans, cucumbers, yellow squash, and zucchini thrive. Tomato plants are a thrill to grow even in containers. Bird house gourds, watermelons, and pumpkins will flourish with plenty of sun, water, and fertilizer. Succulents in small container gardens can suffice for small areas in the sun so consider planting succulents. Keep those thumbs green and dirty and keep Deerwood beautiful. Remember a $10 flat of colorful annuals will last until December. Let us wish a speedy recovery to Herman, our favorite DIA Maintenance Man and a special thank you to Herb Monroe for three years of dedicated service as the DIA Landscape Committee Chairman. Herb has personally revamped and inspected the irrigation on all of our 78 islands and has contributed endless hours making Deerwood beautiful. As you drive past the Deerwood entrances, the Playground, the Memorial Garden, the school zone, and the newly planted trees, please think about the work accomplished by your Landscape Committee and join us!

Nanak Lawn and Garden Tips

In May, begin watching for chinch bug damage in
St. Augustine lawns. The damage usually occurs in
sunny locations near the street, sidewalk or driveway.
The grass dies in patches and turns straw brown.
Damaged areas do not recover and must be plugged
or sodded.

  • If the weather is dry, water the lawn as allowed by
watering restrictions applying 3/4 inch per application.
  • Mole crickets are a problem lawn pest in Northeast
Florida and Southeast Georgia. If a problem, control
them when mole crickets are small. Water the lawn
    before applying an insecticide.
  • In June, remove old blooms and flower spikes from
annuals. This is called “dead heading” and makes the
    flowers bloom longer.
  • Those who plan to treat for mole crickets and did not
do it in May should apply the product by mid-June.
  • In July, watch annuals, pyracantha and junipers for
spider mite damage. These small pests are almost
invisible and feed on plants by sucking juice out of
    the leaves.

Cares Committee

We are happy to announce the formation of the “Cares Committee.” It will be designed and directed to address the cares, concerns and needs of our Deerwood residents. This committee can grow to have an integral part in the life of our community, but we need your help and input!

We would love to have representation from each unit of Deerwood. You are invited to join your friends and neighbors for an organizational meeting on Wednesday, June 8th, at 5:30 p.m. We’ll meet at the Club House.

Be there, because “Deerwood Matters!”

Architectural Review Committee (ARC)

Thanks to all for helping
to keep Deerwood the
sought after place to live!

Before making any exterior changes to your home, yard, fence or driveway, please contact the ARC Coordinator, Tobé Budner, at 285-2519. You will also fi nd answers too many ARC questions in the DIA website, www.mydeerwood.com.

The ARC is seeing many roof replacements in the community, some due to insurance requirements and others just for maintenance purposes. In addition there are a lot of homes being repainted, plant beds redone and paver driveways and walkways installed. Don’t forget that you will need ARC approval for these items if you are changing materials or colors. If you are replacing your roof or repainting your home in the same colors you do not need to go through the approval process, but are still required to notify the ARC Coordinator.
